Requirements and compatibility
What you need to work with Fudinow, with no fine print: the browser, the computer, the printer, the connection, and what keeps working when the internet goes down.
Browsers
Fudinow is a website: you install nothing to get started.
- To use the system
- Chrome or Edge 107 or newer, Firefox 104 or newer, or Safari 16 or newer, on a computer, tablet or phone.
- To print over USB or Bluetooth
- Chrome or Edge on a computer. Safari and Firefox do not let a page talk to the printer; there you use the desktop app.
- On phone and tablet
- The whole system works, but the printer connects from the computer or from the desktop app.
Computers and desktop app
The desktop app is optional: it is for network printers or printers installed on the computer, and for having Fudinow as a program.
- Windows
- Windows 10 (version 1809 or later) or 11, 64-bit (x64). There is no version for Windows on ARM yet. The installer is Fudinow-Setup.exe.
- Mac
- Mac with Apple Silicon or Intel: one installer, Fudinow.dmg, covers both.
- App status
- Being tested on real computers, printers and networks before its general release.
- Without installing anything
- If you do not use network printers, the browser is enough: you do not need the app.
Printers and cash drawer
Thermal receipt and kitchen printers using the ESC/POS standard, 58 mm (32 columns) or 80 mm (42 or 48 columns).
- Over USB or serial
- From Chrome or Edge on the computer, authorising it once.
- Over Bluetooth
- From Chrome or Edge on the computer, pairing it once with that browser.
- Over the network (Wi-Fi or cable)
- With the desktop app. The printer needs a fixed address on the restaurant's network; unless you set another port, Fudinow uses 9100.
- Installed on Windows or Mac
- The desktop app also prints to the printers already installed on the computer: it finds them and you choose which one to use.
- Cash drawer
- Connected to the receipt printer: it opens with the pulse the printer sends.
Connection
Fudinow runs in the cloud: for the full service, every device needs internet.
- Need internet
- Kitchen screens, card payments, the online store and orders coming from apps.
- Several terminals with the desktop app
- They find each other over the restaurant's network. On Windows that network must be set as private; the installer opens only the ports it uses (TCP 47320, UDP 47321 and UDP 5353), and only on private networks.
- Wi-Fi
- The router must not isolate devices from each other. If it does, the app tells you the devices are on the Wi-Fi but cannot reach each other.
- On a Mac
- Allow the «Local Network» permission when macOS asks for it.
If the internet goes down
The till keeps selling. It is not that the whole restaurant works offline: it is the sales terminal, and it keeps everything for when the connection returns.
- You can still
- Open checks, add products and take cash, with the total estimated until the connection returns.
- Kitchen tickets
- They wait on the terminal and reach the kitchen screen when the connection returns. Meanwhile, tell the kitchen.
- On hold
- Card and QR payments, gift cards, discounts, voids and refunds, and orders from apps or your online store.
- Do not lock the terminal
- Unlocking it with a PIN and opening or closing the till need a connection.
- Where it works
- On a paired sales terminal. A browser that is not paired works online only.
- When the connection returns
- Everything you captured uploads on its own and in order, each thing exactly once: nothing is duplicated or lost.
